Photography, William

Word-ish Wednesday: William’s One Year Old Portraits!

William turned the big ONE on June 18th, and since then, I’ve been harboring some mom-guilt (and second to that, photographer-mom-guilt) over having not done a portrait session for his birthday. Ugh! Last Thursday, I was getting ready to leave to get my hair cut, and while I was waiting for Adrian to get home from work to keep an eye on William, I decided to grab my camera and just do his portrait shoot right then! I’m so glad I did! He looked extra cute (since he’d just had HIS hair cut), the lighting was perfect, and I was able to get some great expressions out of him. It was also the first time he’d ever really played in the grass, so it was fun to capture that moment “on film.”

My set up wasn’t at all fancy or elaborate, and it only took about 15 minutes or so from start to finish. I just found a clear patch of grass on the side of my house that was a safe distance from the street and plopped him down. He’s walking now, but wasn’t really interested in moving much in the grass, so I just moved around him using my 5D Mark III and 50mm f/1.4 lens to capture different angles and to vary the somewhat-boring background of my side-yard a bit.

I posted the full set of images over at my Karen Lisa Artistic Photography blog, but these are my three favorites:

Baby's First Impression of Grass | SIREN.ORG
First reaction to grass! Hey, what is this stuff…. it feels funny! Hee hee!

Serious Baby Boy | SIREN.ORG
The serious look… probably getting a little bored with photos now that I was on to the second outfit of the session.

Baby Will is ONE!! | SIREN.ORG
My favorite little smile! I had to sing the Darth Vader theme song to get him to giggle and laugh for this photo and the next couple of images that came after!
