Interview with a Photographer Mom: Carrie Bombria

All you have to do is look at Carrie’s blog to see what a great storyteller she is! Her images are beautiful – so clean and crisp! Of course I’m jealous that she gets to shoot in beautiful Vermont (at least jealous during the summer months – during the winter not so much! lol). After reading Carrie’s interview, I feel like I have a lot more in common with her than I thought – both of us grew up with a dad who was a photographer, and both of us relate similarly to being a mom and owning a business. I really enjoyed reading Carrie’s answers to my questions, and I hope you’ll like the interview too. Be sure to check out her work as well, she rocks!

How long have you been a photographer, and how did you get started? Officially since 2007.  I’ve always been somewhat artistic my whole life doing all sorts of crafty and creative things but when my daughter was born prematurely in 2006, I had the urge to capture every single moment she was in the NICU because I knew how much she was going to change and I always wanted to remember every moment.  My father is also a photographer and he noticed that I had a good eye and it sort of went off from there!

What’s your favorite type of session to photograph, and why? It’s a tie between Senior Portraits and Engagement Sessions.  With both sessions, they’re at this pivotal moment in their life and I’m the lucky one they selected to capture it!

What are three words that describe your photography? detailed, fun, and thoughtful

Are you a Canon or Nikon girl, and which lens is typically glued to your camera? Nikon for sure and even though it weighs a ton, the 70-200mm is almost always on my camera!

How do you find balance being a mom and managing your own photography business? I’m not going to lie…..it’s a struggle!  At the same time, it’s a complete blessing.  From June-October I’m glued to my computer and I had a really hard time this past year with how much time I spent actually working.  I was BEYOND busy with senior portraits, to the point where I was turning potential clients away because I was starting to feel overwhelmed.  I knew that if I took on more than 3 sessions a week plus weddings on Saturdays, my role as a mommy would become second in my life and for me that just wasn’t an option.  I am a mom and wife first and a blessed photographer second!  What helped me the most was taking multiple breaks- it not only eased my workload but it also made me feel like a better parent when I was able to do activities with her.  Now that she’s in school full time, I’m lost sometimes with my daily workflow, but now that I have my evening back and get to have dinner with my family again I get to be just a mom again for the next 6 or so months!!

What’s your best advice for photographing your own kids? Don’t force it!!!  My daughter was so easy to photograph when she was younger and now that she’s on the go, she wants nothing to do with my camera (though I’m hoping that will change at some point!)  As a photographer, I want photos of my child to be the best but I’ve come to learn that I need to take what she gives me…..even if it’s a scary face with her tongue sticking out!

How do you stay inspired? By reading magazines and watching people.  I’m a people watcher….I like to watch their movement and watch their interaction amongst each other!

What’s your guilty pleasure? Dr. Pepper….sadly it’s a guilty pleasure that I gave up last Friday!!

What’s the best thing about your job? The connections I get to make, the memories I preserve and last but not least…..working at home in my pajamas!!

Show me your most recent favorite image: This one is from a wedding a couple of weeks ago at an Inn less than a quarter of a mile from my house (not only is it a beautiful place to get married, but it’s also a great commute….and Michael J. Fox was married there so it has to be cool!!)
