Getting in shape, the geeky way

I decided to post a Geeky Friday blog today since I haven’t done one in a while.

So, for the past 2 weeks I have started working out again. I have a new workout regimen doing cardio dance and Zumba at home.

I have really been enjoying it, and I actually do feel healthier! After a week of workouts, I started to feel like there was more that I could do, and then I came across… this.

The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Fun Run/Walk.

My friend Becca shared it on her Facebook last weekend, and I thought to myself, hmmm. Well, if there was ever a reason to start running, Doctor Who is a great one.

Now, if you know me, you know I am not a runner, and I have always detested the idea of running or jogging, or even walking. I have every excuse in the book – the Florida heat, my flat-footedness, it’s raining, I don’t want to join a gym… ok, whatever. It is time to stop making excuses. I learned this week that the heat is not THAT bad if I go early enough in the morning (before 10am) and that walking and jogging in the rain is kinda fun. I also learned that going out at noon really sucks, because it truly is hot outside.

So, I downloaded Couch to 5K on my iPhone, and when I’m finally able to hit the 5K mark, I’m going to register for the Doctor Who Fun Run/Walk. The registration deadline is in September, so that gives me a couple months to train for it.

Because I want this medal:

Isn’t it cute? Right now I am kind of a sucky runner, in that I mostly just walk and have to push myself through the running portions. I can only do about 2 miles in the 30 minutes that it takes me to go through the C25K program, but I’ve only just completed week 1. I feel like I’ve made a lot of accomplishments already in this first week. Namely, actually being able to jog for 60 seconds straight. I know, it sounds pathetic, but I have really gotten out of shape. As of Monday, I’ll be starting week 2 and I can’t wait to see where this program takes me!

So, here I am after today’s walk/jog. Go me!

Yay, #running!

Have any of you ever done C25K and started out the program being completely athletically challenged like I am? How did it turn out for you? Are you still running today?

  1. I haven’t done C25K myself, but I know plenty who have. I think you’re doing GREAT! The best advice I’ve heard is to repeat weeks when you need to. From what I understand, some weeks will just feel really tough. If you start to feel like you can’t go on to the next week, don’t be afraid to repeat the one you’re on before going forward. Good luck, Karen! You can do this!

    1. Thanks Kim!! I actually was thinking about that, the repeating. I may go ahead and repeat week 1 since I really would love to be able to run for the full 60 second segment before moving on to the next stage. The way things are now, I usually fall short a couple seconds on most of the 60 second jogging segments, and as I get more tired, usually towards the middle before I get my last surge of energy, I can only do about 45 seconds straight. So I think I am going to repeat the first week before moving on. Great advice!!
