Crissy (of dearcrissy.com and Catapult Photography) and I have been online friends since we were around 15 and 16 years old, both with your typical teen girl websites posting our poetry, artwork, photography, and God knows what else. We both got into the “domain thing” at the same time in the late 90’s which back then was a pretty big deal! I bought siren.org, and she’s been through a couple other domains. And both of us started our photography businesses within a couple years of each other and became moms within the same year of one another.

Crissy has been one of my favorite photographer friends for a long time – she started out years ago doing tons of amazing personal themed shoots, many images which I can still remember even from years ago because they were so beautiful and striking, and moved on to shooting sessions and weddings for clients. She’s one of the most talented people I know. I’m thankful to call her a friend of mine, and it’s been fun to watch each other grow artistically, plus sharing stories about our adorable little boys has brought us closer together. How long have you been a photographer, and how did you get started? I’ve been working for 4 years. People always ask me if I went to school for photography, and the answer is no! My degree is in English, however, a strong internal pull to create visual art led spin my hobby into a career.

What’s your favorite type of session to photograph, and why? I love photographing children, even more so now that I am a mother. There is nothing more satisfying than capturing the fleeting giggles of a spirited child.

What are three words that describe your photography? Emotional, fresh, and luminous.

Are you a Canon or Nikon girl, and which lens is typically glued to your camera? I heart Nikon, and I adore my 50mm 1.4!

How do you find balance being a mom and managing your own photography business? Honestly, this is a challenge for me, and I am always looking for better ways to manage my time. Thankfully, I do have a babysitter a couple days a week, and those work hours are precious to me.

What’s your best advice for photographing your own kids? Relax and shoot everything. I tend to become frustrated with my toddler when I feel like I can’t illicit a smile, or can’t get him to be still for even one second, but really, those animated images of him just being HIM are priceless.

How do you stay inspired? I try to keep up with all of my favorite photographers online!

What’s your guilty pleasure? I kind of love soap operas. When my son is napping, I am totally trying to catch up on what’s happening at General Hospital.

What’s the best thing about your job? Exceeding my clients expectations.
