Interview with a Photographer Mom: Angie Sloan

Angie Sloan is one of my favorite photographers, one of my favorite moms that I follow online, probably one of my favorite people that I’ve met online in recent years. The first thing you need to know about Angie is that she has a huge heart and is an awesome mom and friend, the second is that she is a truly genuine person, and the third is that she is adorable. 🙂 We had the chance to meet at WPPI photographers convention in Vegas this past  year, though briefly, and I hope we see each other again one day soon. Angie (and her hubby Matt for that matter) = awesome. I’m happy to share her thoughts and creativity with you today!

How long have you been a photographer, and how did you get started? We started a photo/video business on the weekends 9 years ago when we first got married. We did that for a couple years and when I wasn’t shooting video  I started shooting photography with Matt and loved it! We decided 4 years ago to go full time.

What’s your favorite type of session to photograph, and why? I love Weddings! I love when families open up to us and just completely invite us into their lives for those small, but so special moments. We’ve also shot a couple sessions of Women with terminal cancer. These sessions are probably my favorite, because they involve some of the most real, sincere, and intense emotion.

What are three words that describe your photography? Hmmmm. Im not sure to be honest. I feel like i’m constantly evolving and as I experience life and change I feel like my style changes as well. We really love to have fun and capture beautiful light and our couples personalities.

Are you a Canon or Nikon girl, and which lens is typically glued to your camera? Canon 5D. My go to lens is the 35 L 1.4

How do you find balance being a mom and managing your own photography business? Im blessed because My husband and I are a team, so he does so much to help me out. I work Monday’s and occasionally on Thursdays and a couple nights a week when the kiddos go to bed. I just keep it separate. When I am with the kids I don’t do any work or take phone calls etc. In fact I usually leave my phone in the car and even sometimes leave it at home. That way I don’t have the urge to check Twitter or my emails!

What’s your best advice for photographing your own kids? Capture them doing their favorite things like running around being silly, dancing, building forts, and looking for bugs.

How do you stay inspired? The people in my life inspire me. Movies and Music are also huge inspirations for me.

What’s your guilty pleasure? Chocolate, Disneyland, massages, and snuggling up on the couch eating snacks and watching my weekly tv shows.

What’s the best thing about your job? There is a certain amount of freedom we get and I love that! It is such a blessing to be able to spend time as a family when we need to take days off.
